Thesis (M.S.)--D'Youville College, 2004.
This descriptive exploratory study was conducted to determine perceptions of caring by baccalaureate nursing students and what effect years of nursing education had on their perceptions. Watson's (1979, 1988) theoretical framework was utilized to examine the research questions. Larson's (1987) Care-Q instrument was used to measure the subjects' perceptions of caring behaviors. The study used a sample of 40 nursing students: 10 from each year of study. Results indicated a significant statistical difference between all 4 years of study. Significant pairwise comparisons were seen when comparing fourth-year nursing students to any of the previous 3 years. Comparisons between first-, second-, and third-year students were not seen to be significant. Overall, all baccalaureate nursing students perceived caring as being a very important component of nursing practice.
