Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Minnesota, 2004.
This study investigated the efficacy of a structured reminiscence intervention, The Life Review Program (LRP) on life satisfaction and psychological well-being of African American community-dwelling seniors. The LRP was revised and implemented using culturally relevant themes. Using a repeated measure design, 31 community-dwelling seniors (assigned to treatment and control groups) were measured on psychological well-being and life satisfaction after participating in the revised LRP for African Americans for 10-weeks. The differences between the treatment and control groups on life satisfaction and on six dimensions of psychological well-being were not statistically significant. Data from the focus groups revealed that the intervention was an effective trigger for life review for experimental group subjects, and that having culturally relevant activities and themes facilitated integrative and instrumental types of reminiscence. A replication study with a larger sample is recommended to further test the efficacy of the LRP for African American community-dwelling seniors.
