The transition from adolescence to adulthood has been noted as a difficult time for individuals who suffer from chronic illnesses. The goal of this study was to enhance the psychosocial functioning and disease management of adolescents and young adults with sickle cell disease (SCD). The study implemented and compared the relative efficacy of an education-support group intervention (experimental) versus treatment-as-usual condition in improving psychosocial functioning and disease management. An eight session, manual-based treatment, utilizing a stress and coping framework, was applied to a sample comprised of 39 African American and 1 Hispanic adolescent and young adult sickle cell disease patients between the ages of 16--25 years. It was predicted that individuals randomly assigned to the experimental intervention would evidence greater improvements in psychosocial functioning and have better disease outcomes than their demographically matched peers in the control condition.

Participants of the study completed composite measures of sickle cell disease knowledge, self-efficacy, active coping strategies and medical outcome at preintervention and postintervention assessment. A GLM repeated measures procedure was employed to detect intervention effects. Additional exploratory analyses were done on the subscales of the medical outcome and coping strategies outcome variables (which did not reveal statistical significance in the initial analysis of the data) to examine statistical differences that were not detected in the initial analysis.

The results of the study indicated greater improvements in sickle cell disease knowledge and self-efficacy for adolescents and young adults who participated in the SCD intervention in comparison to those who participated in the control condition (treatment-as-usual). Further analyses revealed that participants in the psychoeducational intervention evidenced significantly greater improvements on the subscales of the medical outcome and coping strategies measures in comparison to those who participated in the control condition.
