Imagine yourself eager to learn about the basis of all sounds, sound synthesis. As you approach a synthesizer for the first time, you face a plethora of identical knobs, sliders and cables. This situation can be very discouraging because, to create sounds, the user must first memorize knob functions. Once we determine how to make a sound, understanding parameters of sounds played becomes difficult. Even more difficult is learning to control a synthesizer to sculpt the sound you wish to create.

The project Soundform was based upon the theory that through the use of audio-visual semantics, the learning and understanding of sounds could be assisted. Soundform allows users to physically construct synthesized sounds in an audio-visual semantic way, via seven-inch algorithmic forms.
