This project examined how interface design and industrial design coexist in the interactive product development process. A preliminary study of the background, essential elements and paradigms of the area were examined. Following that an examination of the existing methodological models used in industrial design and interface design situations was explored. This assessment pointed to a lack in an effective methodology for interface designers and industrial designers to follow in the creation of a computer-based product such as the information appliance. A new conceptual methodological model was then formed that took into account the existing models and the new paradigms interface design brought to product design. In order to examine the model, a design activity was then undertaken that investigated both the interface/digital design and the artifact/physical design. As a design problem, an information appliance used to interact with news media was selected. Combining work done on three-dimensional information landscapes and the information appliance yielded a design of both interface and artifact coherency.
