Practical issues in vector OFDM implementation, such as guard band configuration, timing estimation, as well as carrier and sampling frequency synchronization, are studied and solutions with performance comparable to those of OFDM are proposed. An equivalent structure derived for vector OFDM manifests the relation between OFDM and vector OFDM. Based on this structure, the solutions to guard band configuration and post-FFT carrier and sampling frequency synchronization are derived from those of OFDM. It is also shown by analysis that the pre-FFT algorithms for timing estimation and coarse carrier frequency synchronization can be extended from those of OFDM.

The complexity of the optimal demodulator for vector OFDM increases exponentially in terms of the vector size and becomes prohibitive for large vector size. Iterative demodulation and decoding for convolutionally coded vector OFDM systems is studied and demodulation schemes, with linear complexity in terms of the vector length, are proposed and compared. The highlighted demodulator with soft interference cancellation dynamically updates the symbol estimates and their instantaneous reliability measure based on the code bit probabilistic information passed from preceding iterations. It mitigates error propagation that is detrimental to the demodulator with hard interference cancellation and achieves performance close to that of the optimal demodulator.

Deliberately clipping over-sampled signals is a simple and efficient way of controlling PAPR of OFDM. However, it is a nonlinear process and leads to significant distortion and performance loss. An iterative time-domain decision-aided clipping compensation framework is proposed to mitigate the distortion caused by intentional clipping with the additional constraint of out-of-band noise filtering, and compared with the existing frequency-domain scheme. It incorporates the simple additive distortion model and the minimum mean square distortion (MMSD) model, with options of hard and soft symbol estimation. The scheme with the best performance, frequency-domain decision-aided clipping compensation based on the MMSD model, is applied to scalable video transmission with multi-band OFDM. Simulations demonstrate effective mitigation of performance loss.
