The subjects were first given a brief questionnaire to determine mental alertness. A second interview in the form of a questionnaire was given, which provided the sequential format for the life stories.

The format allowed the subjects to briefly tell about their lives in three developing stages: life back home, life after they left home, and finally, life in Los Angeles. The stories were taped, transcribed, and edited.

This cohort age group unanimously confirmed the dictum that strong family influences, religious faith centered in church, and perseverance, were tools for survival for African Americans despite their slave heritage.
