Haydn used two themes with contrasting characters and keys in the Variations in F minor, creating double variations. Also, he made a rondo-variation by combining the elements of rondo and variations in the finale of his Piano Sonata in D major, Hob. XVI: 19. It demonstrates the composer's first love of synthesis of the music forms.

In all of Mozart's independent sets of variations, the Variations in F major, K. 613, the last set of the variations composed in his last year, features an introduction before the theme, and it is varied independently in each variation.

Mozart used theme and variations twice in his piano sonatas: the last movement of Sonata in D major, K. 284 and the first movement of Sonata in A major, K. 331, in which the composer used the variation form instead of a sonata-allegro movement. The Piano Concerto in C minor, K. 491 achieves a mature and supreme variation technique with great contrasts and diversities.

For Beethoven, Variations in C minor, WoO 80 is an important example of the continuous variations in the Classical era. The slow movement of the Piano Sonata in F minor, Op. 57 implies the spiritual character of the slow variation movements that he wrote in his late years. Of his piano concertos, he applied a mini-variation form in the second movement of the Piano Concerto No. 5, Op. 73.

Schubert employed the theme and variations in the slow movement of the Fantasy in C major, Op. 15, and he used the rhythm of his song Der Wanderer as a base for the whole piece. He also wrote an independent set of variations: Impromptu in B-flat major, Op. 142, No. 3, one of his most beautiful sets of variations.
