This dissertation examines the impact of the Human Immuno-deficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) on artists, visual artistic expression and traditional crafts in Southern Africa.

The investigation was based on the hypothesis that: (1) Southern African artists, having witnessed devastating social and economic effects or having been personally affected by the scourge, are not indifferent to the challenges and implications of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, and (2) whether positively (recognizing favorable conditions for advancing one's artistic and/or economic situation) or negatively (opportunistic), they express their individual concerns through their various forms of artistic expression and/or traditional crafts.

The approach used was a comparative analysis of three Southern African countries---Botswana, South Africa, and Zimbabwe---and the various HIV/AIDS-inspired artistic expressions and traditional crafts emanating from each one. Individuals interviewed include indigenous Africans, both black and white, and, in a few instances, expatriates, now holding African passports.

The conclusions drawn from this investigation suggest that while artists/craftsmen may be sympathetic and, perhaps, prompted by a sense of moral obligation, this contemporary issue is: (1) prompting changes in indigenous cultural forms, (2) providing a unique opportunity for the integration of all representations of African culture, as it applies to the visual arts and traditional crafts, and (3) ultimately acknowledging the flexibility of Africans, their traditions, and the continent.
