Sayf al-Din Tankiz al-Nasiri governed the province of Syria during the reign of sultan al-Nasir Muhammad Ibn Qalawun, one of the best documented and most productive periods for architecture in the Mamluk era. His unusually long tenure, from 1312--1340, allowed him to give sustained attention to the built environment of the region at a time when the vicissitudes of political careers often interrupted patronage efforts. During his term, he undertook an ambitious program of construction throughout the Syrian province that involved monuments, urban works and renewal projects. The goal of this dissertation is two-fold: first, to ascertain the extent of Tankiz's patronage, by identifying the structures erected with his sponsorship and the nature of his participation with them; and second, to situate these works within the broader contexts of architectural and historical developments in the region and patterns of patronage during the Mamluk period.

The works are discussed in a chronological format divided along geographical lines. Commissions that have not been previously published are analyzed in considerable detail. Those which are no longer extant are reconstructed with the aid of remaining archeological evidence, literary descriptions and documentary source material. The final chapter deals with issues that span the geo-chronological divisions set out in the preceding chapters, analyzing the role of the patron in reshaping urban landscapes, the dissemination of architectural and decorative forms and the relationship between political and architectural patronage.

This study reveals Tankiz to have been exceptionally involved in both his duties as regional governor and in his architectural commissions. Through these works Tankiz displays a keen sense of existing urban dynamics and a remarkable ability to exploit them for the success of his new works. His strategic siting policy shows an appreciation for the historical geography of Syria and its capital and for its commemorative and propagandistic potential. His cultivation of an atelier of talented artisans gives a sense of unity to his architectural patronage. This atelier, its peregrinations between Cairo and the Syrian provinces, and its relationship to the sultan and his commissions is also examined.
