Thesis (M.S.)--Utah State University, 2004.
Despite the research of the past several decades, the inability to navigate unfamiliar environments remains a key barrier to equal access for 11.4 million visually impaired individuals in the United States. Our objective was to come up with an assisted navigation system that will seamlessly integrate into the lifestyle of the visually impaired and help them overcome the navigation barriers without imposing upon them any physical or cognitive load. Towards this objective, we are developing an assisted navigation system for the visually impaired. Robotic Guide (RG) is an initial prototype of the system, that consists of a mobile robotic platform upon which a sensor suite is mounted.

Robotic guides developed in the past are either unsuitable for our purpose, or are expensive and difficult to replicate and deploy. This thesis particularly presents the orientation free Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-based navigation in RG. We make use of the inherent structure of an indoor environment, knowledge of empty spaces around RG and the passive RFID tags embedded in the environment to navigate to specific destinations. Our approach guarantees reachability, but not optimality. RG is guaranteed to reach the destination; however, sometimes due to losses, the path to the destination might not be optimal. With the RFID tags embedded in the environment, the problem of localization is greatly simplified. In summary, we show that in structured indoor environments, our approach of orientation free RFID-based navigation is easy to replicate and deploy, and guarantees reachability.
