In recent years, prevalence studies have found that adolescent gambling occurs nearly universally in North America, and of those youth who gamble, a significant number do so to a degree that negatively impacts themselves and their families. Yet, adolescent problem gambling remains a little-known problem, even among therapists, youth counselors, and educators, and many parents continue to gamble with their children. Of the few gambling-prevention programs of any kind that exist, most consist of videos and posters rather than comprehensive, school-based programs like those targeted at substance use, that have been in place in the schools for decades.

520 $a Although more attention has been focused on research and treatment of youth problem gambling in the last 10 years, relatively little has filtered into the area of prevention. As a step in addressing the resulting developmental lag in prevention, this dissertation proposes an interactive DVD or CD-ROM problem gambling prevention tool for adolescents. In support of this, it examines the literature relevant to adolescent gambling, specifically prevalence, risk factors, consequences, and gambling behaviors. It also looks at the similarities between problem gambling and substance abuse. The similarities suggest looking to substance-abuse prevention literature and programs in designing a gambling-prevention effort. Finally, it presents the proposal itself and suggests a design for a preliminary evaluation of the program when it is produced.
