Review of related literature indicated that research emphasizing the mountain states graphic communications education and industry status had not been conducted. During the examination of related literature, numerous studies were found relating to general areas of graphic communications industry and education, but very few were found that were related to this study. Related materials for this study were limited. Also, it indicated that graphic communications professionals and doctoral students have used survey research methods to investigate the industry and education status.

This study utilized a "descriptive research method" employing two survey instruments. The sample selected for the study consisted of 80 printing educators and 478 printing industry representatives. A random sampling technique was used to identify the small and medium size printing firms because of the larger population. Data was generated from the returned surveys and it consisted two parts, descriptive statistics and the inferential analysis. The descriptive statistics was the primary statistical method. The inferential statistics method was used on those variables that produced a statistical significant value.

A majority of the educational institutions are not offering a full fledged graphic communications educational program. However, they are offering several courses and associate degree level programs. The depth of course contents taught to student may be different from institution to institution and program to program. This is due to the level of the programs and the status of the institutions. Printing industry in the mountain states is growing, changing job descriptions due to the technological changes, and demanding skilled workforce in some areas of the industry. The long term solution is that the industry and educators need to work together to enhance the current educational programs and introduce new programs and or curriculum where needed.
