Modulation transfer function (MTF) measurements, particularly for staring imager systems, are affected by the position of the test target with respect to the rows and columns of the detector array. We demonstrate that random transparency targets of known spatial-frequency content allow shift-invariant MTF measurement, with relaxed alignment tolerances compared to methods that employ deterministic targets. The random-transparency method produces results that agree with the position-averaged line-response MTF.Subjects--Topical Terms:

These transparencies are designed and demonstrated for the visible, 3- to 5-

bands. The halftone apertures that comprise the transparencies are sized such that the transmittance is a linear function of aperture size. A mathematical model for this criterion was formulated using vector diffraction theory, and experimentally verified.
