The purpose of this study is to formulate guidelines for pedaling Brahms' duo sonatas for piano and strings. The development of pedal mechanisms, notation, and technique is traced. The mechanics and operation of the modern grand piano's pedals are described. Pedaling concepts from the literature are organized to provide a summary of basic pedal usage.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Elements of Jan LaRue's style analysis (timelines, stress graphs) are used to analyze the sonatas and problematic pedaling passages. Brahms' pedal notations are investigated for stylistic use. Criteria for the identification of pedaling conflicts are developed, forming the basis for identifying problematic pedaling passages in the sonatas. Randomly selected problematic passages are analyzed with stress graphs to show conflicting or simultaneous points of activity or intensification in musical elements (sound, harmony, melody, rhythm, growth).

A questionnaire designed to conceptualize the pedaling expertise of ensemble pianists was administered in personal taped interviews. Five pianists were asked to notate pedaling for the randomly selected problematic passages of the sonatas. Their pedaling concepts are organized to formulate guidelines for pedaling string duos. Pedaling realizations are listed and identified under the problematic passages, illustrating agreement and disagreement. Stress graphs analyzing musical elements and intensifications are included for clarification of conflicts and possible correlation with the experts' pedalings. Based upon these data, principles for pedaling Brahm's duos were then formulated.
