Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Colorado at Boulder, 1998.
This document describes the design and implementation of a three-dimensional electromagnetic simulation based on the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method. The method presented here is a variant of the standard FDTD implementation. This variant is intended to reduce the numerical dispersion error that results from discretization used in the FDTD method. A reduced dispersion error allows for the simulation of larger structures with more accuracy than is found in previous second-order accurate schemes. Previous work has been done reducing the numerical dispersion error in two dimensional simulations; in this document the previous work is extended from two dimensions into three dimensions. The benefits in accuracy for three-dimensional simulations are discussed and demonstrated. Other issues analyzed and discussed include: three-dimensional analysis of numerical dispersion, stability, and the proper modeling of boundary conditions.
