There is increasing interest in the use of high tunnels for growing high-value vegetable crops to improve farm production and increase income. High tunnels are solar heated structures that are used to extend the growing season of many horticulture crops. Intercropping or polyculture is a cropping system that involves growing more than one crop in the same row or space at the same time. When intercropping systems are applied to high tunnels, the expected result is that a grower can increase revenue per square foot when compared to monoculture systems.

In separate investigations tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum ) were intercropped with lettuce (Latuca sativa ), basil (Ocimum basilicum) carrots (Daucus carota) and bell peppers (Capsicum annuum) to evaluate the effects of polyculture on fruit size, quality, and marketable yield compared to monoculture systems of the same crops. Intercropped tomatoes showed no significant reduction in yield, fruit size or quality when intercropped with lettuce, basil and peppers when compared with monoculture tomatoes. When tomatoes were intercropped with carrots polyculture tomato yields were reduced significantly. Lettuce, basil and bell pepper yields were all reduced significantly when intercropped with tomatoes compared to monoculture systems of these same crops. Carrots showed no reduction in yield when intercropped with tomatoes, provided the intercropped carrots were allowed fifteen days longer to mature compared to monoculture carrots. Relative Yield and Relative Value Totals were used to determine the efficiency of the intercropping systems compared to monoculture systems.

This research indicated, by using protective structures such as high tunnels, that intercropping is more efficient use of space in many cases than monoculture systems however, the efficiency of intercropping is reduced in some instances when yields are expressed in monetary values.
