Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Iowa, 1991.
This work assesses the usefulness and limitations of various analytical approaches and computer codes for modelling 1-D mobile-bed problems. Formulation of the 1-D mobile-bed models is first discussed. A general assessment of analytical models then follows. Three models are chosen for evaluation and found to be limited in practical application. Ten existing 1-D numerical codes are then chosen for classification and general assessment. None of the codes is capable of simulating all phenomena and few of them incorporate state-of-the-art knowledge on mobile-bed processes. Two well-tested numerical codes are then assessed by application to three sets of recent flume experiments. These experiments are quite exceptional in terms of near-critical Froude numbers or mixed bed materials. During attempts to model one of the flume experiments, an instability problem in the near-critical region was identified; two devices are proposed to overcome this obstacle.Subjects--Topical Terms:

An inadequacy of transport predictors for sediment mixtures is seen in the inability of two existing methods to produce reasonable predictions for two experiments with nonuniform sediment. The transported gradation is quite different from the gradation of bed-surface material or of the upstream imposed load. This leads to a proposed method using the concept of joint probability to predict the transported gradation. This method is shown to be successful in simulating non-equilibrium tests of nonuniform sediment through comparison with the irreversible overloading and underloading flume experiment.

Finally, two important factors in mobile-bed modelling--steady versus unsteady flow and coupled versus decoupled schemes--are investigated and discussed in detail.
