I investigated potential mechanisms responsible for an observed change that had occurred in the understory of the rare maritime Ilex opaca forest community. Several parameters were evaluated in order to interpret the current conditions of the maritime Ilex forest in the remaining two known locations: the Sunken Forest, Fire Island National Seashore, New York and Sandy Hook, Gateway National Recreation Area, New Jersey.

I described changes in structure and composition over 35 years in an old-growth maritime forest and over 14 years in a mature maritime forest. The disturbance histories, mortality and replacement patterns of the Ilex forests were assembled from analyses of permanent plots and tree rings. The uneven-aged forests rely on frequent, moderate disturbances to replace canopy individuals. Ilex opaca, a very shade-tolerant, long-lived species is increasing in dominance at both locations. While I . opaca stems <10 cm diameter at breast height were common at Sandy Hook holly forest, stems of this size were uncommon at the Sunken Forest. The most plausible mechanism for this observed difference in recent establishment patterns of the forest is intense herbivory at the Sunken Forest.

To examine whether future conditions of the Sunken Forest canopy are likely to resemble the current state, I examined regeneration within canopy gaps and beneath closed canopy and potential regeneration from the seed bank. Cover and density of all species, especially Prunus serotina were higher within treefall gaps. Rhus copallinum dominated the seed bank but was rare in the extant vegetation. Based on comparisons of the forest layers, the future canopy will likely differ from its current composition.

I report three decades of change in the vegetation of the Sunken Forest and two decades of recovery using permanent and fenced plots from which Odocoileus virginianus had been excluded. I assessed the short-term interactions of multiple herbivores and canopy type on forest regeneration using separate enclosures. Exclosure studies indicate that O. virginianus is the dominant herbivore in the forest and is currently impairing the regeneration of woody species. Natural enclosures formed by high densities of Smilax rotundifolia provide spatial refugia for plant species within the Sunken Forest.
