Chapter 4 contains a description of the synthesis of phenyl phosphoric acid functionalized poly(aryloxyphosphazenes). The base polymer poly[(p-methyl phenoxy)-co-(p-bromophenoxy)phosphazene] was treated with LiBu and diphenyl chlorophosphate, followed by deprotection with NaOH. The resultant polymer was acidified, purified, and characterized for chemical structure. Chapter 5 continues the evaluation of these materials, specifically in relation to fuel cell relevant properties such as ion exchange capacity, proton conductivity, water uptake, methanol diffusion, and thermal transitions.

In chapter 6, the development and characterization of a novel sulfonimide-based sidegroup is presented. Synthetic procedures for both the production of the sidegroup as well as the subsequent substitution onto the polymer are detailed. The resultant materials are characterized with respect to ion exchange capacity, water uptake, and proton conductivity. Initial experimentation with blend techniques is also presented. Chapter 7 continues this work, with an expanded look at the properties of these materials and the effects of modification of sidegroup incorporation, blend incorporation, and degree of cross-linking on the properties of proton conductivity, water uptake, ion exchange capacity, and thermal stability. Chapter 8 culminates the work with an evaluation of the sulfonimide based materials in a fuel cell system. This section includes a performance comparison with Nafion, the benchmark standard in the proton exchange membrane fuel cell industry. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
