The research design for this study used a case study approach. Qualitative and quantitative inquiry methods were used to collect data, and included observation, interviews, survey, and document review. Data analysis incorporated Leithwood and Aitken's (1995) seven categories for identifying and describing a school's organizational practices and artifacts. Conclusions of the study indicate that the principal, by establishing expectations that are characterized by the shared norms and values of the school, was the primary catalyst in influencing the school culture. The significance of this study rests in its contribution to the school culture and middle school literature.
