Thesis (Ph.D.)--Jackson State University, 2004.
The purpose of the proposed study was to determine, through discriminant analysis procedures, if individual scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Adolescent version (MMPI-A) could distinguish between chronic and general offenders. A second goal of the study was to determine if MMPI-A profiles could be helpful in predicting chronic recidivism. 156 male juvenile offenders were administered the MMPI-A, the Shipley Institute of Living Scale and the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) locator test. Demographic information and any other supplemental data were obtained from intake records and used for descriptive analyses. It was hypothesized that: (1) specific scales of the MMPI-A will sufficiently discriminate between juvenile delinquents and chronic offenders; (2) the more pathological an MMPI-A profile, evidenced by higher T-scores on clinical and validity scales, the higher the recidivism rate; and (3) analysis of MMPI-A profiles of the proposed sample would reveal a distinct code type specific to juvenile offender populations as outlined in the literature. Results indicated that age and scale 2 (depression) of the MMPI-A were the most influential factors in determining chronicity of juvenile delinquency. These finding are discussed with specific implications for delinquency prevention.
