The main challenge in cellular networks is increasing their capacity and coverage. In emerging wireless networks, we expect that the mobile will be located to within a few meters. We show in this thesis that such location information can be used for improving network capacity and coverage.

All wireless receivers require a channel estimate to demodulate the signal. Due to temporal variations, limited training, and additive noise, the channel estimate usually contains errors which degrade receiver performance. We show that certain channel parameters such as multipath power, angle, and delay are strongly related to the mobile location. This mapping is stationary enough to allow creation of a database of location vs. multipath parameters using a calibration process. Therefore, if the mobile location is available, it can be used to read out channel parameters for the receiver. This in turn can improve channel estimation and leads to better receiver performance and higher capacity and coverage.

We show how our approach can improve path selection, path delay tracking and path angle tracking in CDMA systems. We analyze the resulting improvements in receiver performance and network capacity.
