This thesis explorer the lives, careers, and pedagogical practices of six nineteenth- and early twentieth century women: Lilli Lehmann, Mathilde Marchesi de Castrone, Blanche Marchesi Caccamisi, Luisa Tetrazzini, Pauline Viardot-Garcia, and Jenny Lind. Each of these women offered significant contributions to the field of vocal pedagogy either through written commentaries on the subject, singing careers of documented excellence, or both.

The former traces the course of each woman's life and career; the latter outlines her ideologies and practices as a teacher of singing. Vocal exercises and anatomical figures have been included wherever possible to illustrate the methods espoused by the pedagogues.
520 $a The back matter of the thesis contains partial listings of students taught by Mathilde Marchesi, Blanche Marchesi, and Pauline Viardot-Garcia. Drawn from collections, journal articles, books, and dissertations, these lists name students who had successfull careers as singers and/or voice teachers. Students taught by Lilli Lehmann and Luisa Tetrazzini are included in each woman's chapter, no information on students was available for Jenny Lind. Nearly eighty sources have been consulted and cited in the body of this work.
