The general purpose of this study was to determine the effects of an interactive computer program on the achievement and attitudes towards language learning of fourth semester college students of Spanish. This is not simply a study of the effects of a methodology on student outcomes; rather, it is a study of whether or not students can benefit from a tool which has the potential to empower them to control their own learning.

Foreign language educators are aware of the need to provide authentic input in their classes, and many authentic materials have become available as ancillary materials for textbooks. While these materials have the potential to improve instruction and to provide a window through which students might view the target culture, there are still very few opportunities for many students to actually communicate with native speakers in authentic, interactive situations.

In addition, attitude toward language study and toward the speakers of the target language have been recognized as compelling factors in the degree of success experienced by language learners. Further, studies have shown that attitude can be manipulated when students gain a better understanding of the target language culture and when they have contact with native speakers.

Although we cannot bring native speakers into our classrooms or into our students' homes, there is hope for bringing "virtual" native speakers and their "virtual" communities to our students through a MOO, an telnet-accessible virtual environment in which synchronous communication takes place between people logged on at the same time.

Computer technology has created a new medium for communication, as well as a new means of helping students learn another language, by providing opportunities for realistic practice which were heretofore unavailable. This study examines the effects of an interactive chat program, MundoHispano, on the writing skills and attitudes of fourth semester college students of Spanish.
