The analysis of selected preludes includes a variety of approaches such as traditional harmonic analysis, linear harmonic implications, pitch relations and their resolution, root motion, nontraditional resolution of chords, and serial-like techniques.

Scriabin's musical style changed throughout his life. He moved away from traditional tonality and harmony by expanding his harmony to a point where tonality was almost tonally obscure. Sonority is the most important element contributing to Scriabin's pianistic style. Widely spaced notes and bass figurations, arpeggiated figures, repeated chords, octaves, and double notes are among the other technical devices Scriabin employed to have his desired sound.

His melodies consist of sequence, recurrent rhythmic patterns, intervallic expansion, and contraction. Most often he varies melodies by transposition, reharmonization, restatement in fuller texture, or melodic variation. His phrases are usually four measures long and his pieces may often be analyzed by means of a rhythmic pattern that is repeated in different keys.

Typical preludes display continuous rhythm patterns that accompany treble and bass melodies and serve as a unifying factor. Intricate polyrhythms and syncopation appear as the most characteristic traits of Scriabin's rhythm. Polyphonic textures are a unique trait of Scriabin's style. The melody and bass line, filled with short melodic fragment types of three-part polyphony, are found in his early preludes. Melodically and rhythmically independent four-part textured preludes are found in his middle period, but contrapuntal writing became prevalent in his last period.

Tempi in the preludes are fast or slow: forty-three fast, seventeen moderate, and thirty slow. Scriabin's preludes are often characterized with its tempo fluctuation. Frequent gradual changes in speed and rubato indicate a deliberate unsteadiness of tempo. Wide ranges of dynamics show another characteristic trait of Scriabin's preludes.

The practical applications of this study for performers, teachers, and students were studied. An index that summarizes the difficulties for the piano student is presented, giving practical guidance for the teacher and student.
