This qualitative naturalistic study was designed to explore how experienced certified holistic nurses (HNCs) learned to become competent as holistic nurse practitioners. This study is based on the following assumptions: (1) experienced HNCs were highly motivated to become an HNCs for different reasons; (2) the knowledge, skills and attitudes that experienced HNCs perceive they needed to know in order to become competent as holistic nurses practitioners would vary; (3) there would be no various paths through which these experienced HNCs acquired the knowledge, skills and attitudes they perceived they needed to become competent practitioners; (4) there would be many factors that facilitated and/or impeded the experienced HNCs ability to become competent practitioners.

The primary sources of data were: in-depth interviews of ten HNCs, critical incident reports, and a summative focus group. The key findings uncovered in this research were that: (1) some form of disjuncture existed between the structure of traditional nursing and the need of nurses for continued personal and professional growth and development; (2) needing credibility was key to nurses becoming competent holistic nurse practitioners; (3) all participants used informal learning strategies to help them achieve competency as holistic practitioners; and (4) all participants had to overcome challenges emanating from the traditional system as they transitioned to becoming holistic nurse practitioners.

The conclusions drawn from this study are: (1) awareness of what knowledge, skills and attitudes are required to become competent practitioners; (2) importance of healing oneself before one can heal others; (3) congruency between satisfying personal needs and professional goals and aspirations; (4) open and willing to using various learning strategies fosters continued growth; (5) having a good support system is integral to learning; and (6) view challenges and obstacles as learning opportunities.

The principal recommendation resulting from this study is that there should be a dialogue between the leaders of the holistic nursing community and traditional nursing programs to discuss the incorporation of holistic nursing principles into nursing curricula. Additionally, there needs to be a demystification of what holistic nursing is.
