The equine tarsal joint is the site of a high percentage of hindlimb lameness cases seen in veterinary medicine. To better understand its normal and pathological motion and morphology, a computer model of the joint was developed. Edge detection was performed on computerized tomography images, and the resulting data were used to create an accurate model of the joint.

To demonstrate the model's utility, it was used to evaluate the generally held assumption that all tarsal joint motion occurs at the articulation of the tibia and talus. The motion of the tibia was predicted from the morphology and curvature of the computer model of the talar trochlea, and was compared to results of a three-dimensional kinematic analysis. The experimentally determined motion of the joint, was found to deviate substantially from the model based predictions, and hence it was determined that some amount of tarsal joint motion must occur at the intertarsal and/or tarsometatarsal joints.
