In the past a half century, Tsien has achieved more fame and notoriety than most professionals in his area. His contributions to the development of aeronautics in the United States had earned him a reputation as "an undisputable genius." Back to China, Tsien became the founding father of China's rocket industry. He established the Chinese rocket program from scratch, and played a pivotal role in making China an advanced country in terms of rocket technology.

520 $a Tsien's achievements in the fields of engineering, science and technology resulted from several important factors, including his father's influence, the new Chinese cultural environment in which he grew as a boy, the rigid education he obtained in elementary and high schools, the post graduate courses he took in the United States, von Karman's guidance, his working experience for the American Air Force, as well as the key positions he held in developing China's rocket technology.
520 $a Outside his profession Tsien has been a mysterious figure in the eyes of many people because his life is full of dramatic changes. Tsien has survived numerous political persecutions during the Cold War era, such as the McCarthyism in the United States, the Great Leap Forward movement and the Cultural Revolution in China.

His public speeches have contained some sort of communist propaganda which has made many people believe that Tsien has become a politician. As a matter of fact, he is still a scientist to the core and has been involved in research in a variety of scientific fields after his retirement from rocket programs. Tsien's contributions to aeronautical science and technology have been unanimously acknowledged by his peers and by historians of space technology.
