Thesis (M.S.G.M.P.)--University of Southern California, 1996.
Rapid growth in gerontology has been accompanied by the increasing interest in certification of aging professionals identified as gerontologists. The purpose of this study was to assess the level of interest (measured as ratings of importance) in the certification of gerontologists as well the analysis of the likelihood of certification in the field of aging. Questionnaires were mailed to 201 current members of the American Society on Aging (ASA). Pearson's chi-square test of independence was conducted for each of the eleven items on the questionnaire. Well over two-thirds of the respondents reported that certification in gerontology was important to them. Ratings of both importance and likelihood were related to variables of an educational nature (e.g. education level, courses in aging, and whether the respondent was credentialed in gerontology or another field). Neither ratings of likelihood nor importance were related to the strictly categorical variables of gender or age.Subjects--Topical Terms:
