Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Kentucky, 2002.
This study was designed to delineate antecedents and consequences of abusive supervision. Using Heider's balance theory (1958) and Homan's restorative justice theory (1961), abusive supervision was investigated as a behavior not necessarily aimed at a specific subordinate, but instead the result of a supervisor's displeasure with his or her organization. Second, the idea that abusive supervision manifests itself as a retaliatory behavior depending on the levels of several cognitive, contextual, and personality factors was tested. Third, the extent to which victims of perceived abusive supervision carry this stressor over to the home and family sphere by way of family undermining was measured. Hypotheses were tested using a sample drawn from the MBA ranks of six universities. Results suggest the influence of psychological contract violation, and the interactive effect of hypervigilance, hostile attribution bias, and procedural justice with psychological contract violation in the prediction of abusive supervision. Additionally, higher levels of abusive supervision were associated with higher levels of family undermining. Implications for theory and research conclude the manuscript.
