Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Wisconsin - Madison, 1997.
A thermodynamic description of the Ti-Al-V ternary system is developed using a combination of thermodynamic calculations and experimental determinations. The literature pertaining to the three constituent binaries of this system, as well as to the ternary, is reviewed. The three constituent binary systems, Ti-Al, Al-V and Ti-V, are modeled based on the available experimental data, and the thermodynamic models used to describe the phases in the binary systems are presented. The calculated binary phase diagrams and the thermodynamic properties are shown to be in good agreement with experimental data. The thermodynamic description of the ternary system is obtained by extrapolating from the three constituent binary systems and introducing ternary interaction parameters. The ternary interaction parameters are optimized to fit the available experimental information in the ternary system. Key experiments are carried out to verify and improve the calculations. Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA) is used to establish two partial isothermal sections at 1100
