The recent advance of mouse-operated software commands, color graphics, animation, and improved sound quality have made the computer a powerful learning tool and provided a learning environment containing materials that are self-teaching which can be self-administered and self-corrected. This is basically the Montessori teaching approach.
520 $a Kid's Premusic was developed to provide an environment placing children in control of their learning. This computer-assisted instructional musical program was designed to serve as a preparation before formal musical training for young children.
520 $a A class of 23 young children, ages 3 to 6, from a Montessori school was randomly chosen for the pilot study. A Macintosh computer with 14-inch color monitor was used for the study. Kid's Premusic included 10 lessons featuring four activities within each lesson: improvisation, composition, sightreading, and ear training. The Transfer Test contained 33 questions administered at the end of the study.
520 $a The children were offered opportunities to explore the sounds and choose the matching icons in the order they preferred. This was the first stage in the process of composition. The activities in improvisation and composition exposed the children to visual and aural stimuli and reinforced their perception of sounds and icons--a stepping stone to the understanding of symbols.
520 $a The Results of The Transfer Test and the evaluation of the classroom teachers suggested the feasibility of CAI musical programs. Subjects' attitude toward improvisation and composition were compared. Visual representation of the notation affected the subjects' attitudes toward their products, and the combination of visual and aural feedback affected their compositional style. The data suggested a level of difficulty in transferring the visual icons to aural stimuli, as well as in learning the rhythm.
