Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Minnesota, 1981.
While most polymers behave as loose "random coils" in solution, a number of macromolecules have been synthesized that behave as rigid rods. When dissolved, these inflexible, asymmetric particles can display a liquid crystalline morphology not available to random coil polymers. The liquid crystalline state of Poly-(gamma)-benzyl-L-glutamate (PBLG) is studied by a variety of techniques, including small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), small angle light scattering (SALS), differential scanning calorimetry, and optical microscopy. Special attention is paid to the relationship between morphology and phase behavior.Subjects--Topical Terms:

A second morphology available to solutions of rigid rod polymers is that of a gel. Gelation occurs upon phase separation, for example when cooling the solution. The gel structure appears to be related to the kinetic mechanism of phase separation. Gel structure and the gelation process are studied by SALS and SAXS. An instrument for measurement of scattered light at very low angles is described.

The rigidity of PBLG traces to its (alpha)-helical conformation. The result of defects in the (alpha)-helix is simulated by computer calculation.

In an unrelated study, the phyical solution characteristics of the Dutch Elm toxin Cerato ulmin are considered. It is found that this substance is highly surface active and effectively insoluble in water. A killing mechanism is suggested, which relies on the physical solution characteristics of the toxin alone.
