Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Nevada, Reno, 1997.
As a leader of the dependency school in the 1960s and 1970s, sociologist Fernando Henrique Cardoso's contributions to development literature were studied carefully. Contrary to other dependentistas, his model of associated dependent development emphasized internal dynamics of economic and political change by focusing to a large extent on the industrial elite. When Cardoso became president of Brazil in 1994, he promised to continue to focus on these issues. His policies have reflected that promise to a considerable extent.

My dissertation examines Cardoso's writings over the course of four decades. I argue that his thought has evolved in a coherent and logical manner, with Cardoso adapting to a changing Brazilian state and also to an evolving international global order. I employ two distinct approaches in this dissertation. The hermeneutical approach evaluates Cardoso in the context of Brazilian political and economic history. A bibliometric analysis is used to complement the primary approach.
