Thesis (Psy.D.)--Adler School of Professional Psychology, 2003.
This study investigated the relationship between personality and violent behavior of incarcerated adolescent males by examining their past offenses and personality scores on the Millon Adolescent Clinical Inventory (MACI). Demographic variables including age, age at first arrest, Mental Health Needs Level, and highest education level completed were also examined. The sample consisted of 152 thirteen-to nineteen-year-old subjects who were administered the MACI upon being processed in the Illinois Youth Center---St. Charles Reception & Classification Center (R&C) between January 1, 2002 and February 28, 2002. Demographic data, violent offense information, and MACI scores were statistically analyzed using discriminant function analysis. Violent group membership was 59.9% correctly classified by all twelve MACI scales, while the five "active" MACI scales (6B, 6A, 8A, 4, and 2A) collectively accounted for 61.8% of Violent, 70.5% of mutually exclusive Serious Violent versus Less Violent, and 63.3% of mutually exclusive Serious Violent versus Non-Violent group membership. Individually, the percentage of cases correctly classified with the Forceful scale (2B) was 49.3%, Unruly scale (6A) 50.7%, Oppositional scale (8A) 53.9%, Dramatizing scale (4) 53.9%, and Inhibited scale (2A) 52.6%. Demographic variables of age, age at first arrest, mental health needs level, and highest education completed were collectively found to account for 59.2% of Violent and 65.6% of Serious Violent versus Less Violent group membership.
