Anger is a common emotion, which is experienced by people multiple times daily in varying degrees ranging from annoyance to rage. One way anger may be expressed is through aggressive behaviors, which may constitute a criminal offense. The Uniform Crime Report (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2001) indicated that there were over one million reported violent crimes committed by juveniles in this country in the year sampled. In addition to acting aggressively, delinquent youth have been identified as having difficulty with social adjustment.

The reformulated social information-processing model of Crick & Dodge (1994), suggests that children may err in their processing of social cues, thus resulting in a hostile attribution, which may lead to aggressive behavior. The following study examined the model that social information-processing is a predictor of anger, and aggressive behavior, in a group of juvenile delinquent Black males.

Sixty-seven juvenile delinquent Black males (ages 12--16) in residential treatment participated in this study. Each participant completed the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory-2 (STAXI-2; Spielberger, 1999), a self-report measure designed to assess anger levels and determine anger expression style. Additionally, each participant completed the Youth Self Report (YRS; Achenbach, 2001), a behavioral self-report measure containing a scale assessing the degree of aggressive behavior. Moreover, each participant was read a series of vignettes adapted from Dodge (1990), which were designed to facilitate the processing of ambiguous social cues and was then asked a series of questions about the vignettes designed to assess the cognitive steps of the social information-processing model. Lastly, each resident received the Child Interview for Psychiatric Syndromes (ChIPS; Rooney, Fristad, Weller, & Weller, 1999) to determine the presence of DSM-IV psychiatric syndromes. The program managers of each participant's living unit completed the Teacher Rating Form (TRF; Achenbach, 2001) as a validity check on perceptions of aggressive behavior. All participants were de-briefed and offered a small reward following completion of participation.

The results of the following study supported the central hypothesis that the reformulated social information-processing model (Crick & Dodge, 1994), specifically hostile attributions, is related to aggressive behavior in juvenile delinquent Black males.
