Research conducted on online learning has focused on the areas of administration, funding, learning, and student issues. Little research has been conducted in evaluating faculty perceptions and skills as they begin online teaching. The purpose of this study was to identify the technical skills online teaching environments require and to describe the pedagogical practices that accompanies instructors' development of online courses. Sought was an understanding of the instructors' experiences and pedagogical choices as they migrate from an on site instructional environment to an online instructional environment. This study found that the majority of participants did not fully understand the level of technical knowledge and skills they needed or the pedagogical changes they needed to make when they first moved from a face-to-face to an online teaching environment. The data obtained from this study may help faculty and educational institutions to understand the training and support faculty need as they begin developing and teaching online courses. The study found that the establishment of an effective institutional faculty training and support program is critical to the development of effective and interactive online learning environments.
