This study explored student satisfaction with and estimate of gains from online courses in an urban community college (N = 115). Student input variables and academic environment variables were used in regression analyses to explain variation in student satisfaction and estimate of gains. Eight demographic variables and student learning style served as student inputs. Items measuring electronic engagement functioned as academic environment variables. Five student satisfaction variables and five estimate of gain variables served as output variables.

Learning style did not demonstrate a significant effect on any of the satisfaction or estimate of gain variables. Students with less than one year of prior email experience reported lower levels of satisfaction with Establishing Expectations, Clarity of Communication, and Assessment/Feedback. Older respondents perceived higher levels of gains in Finding and Using Resources. Electronic engagement variables---email correspondence with faculty and participation in course chat rooms---had positive effects on satisfaction and estimate of gains.

Study findings suggest the importance of assessing students' technological readiness prior to enrollment in online courses. Results also indicate the need to consider the pedagogical practices that contribute to electronic engagement. Faculty teaching online courses can incorporate pedagogical practices that ensure that students are given the consideration and communication necessary to be successful and satisfied learners.
