Thesis (Psy.D.)--California School of Professional Psychology - Berkeley/Alameda, 2000.
The prevalence of cancer suggests that its direct and indirect effects are inescapable. When cancer is diagnosed, the impact can be devastating, both physically and psychosocially. Among the many psychological treatments available, bibliotherapy represents a growing and viable option in the quest to help patients and their families cope with the diagnosis of cancer. Of the many possible text formats, workbooks, in particular, seem to offer much to cancer patients. However, few texts available to cancer patients use interactive exercises and books with a workbook focus are non existent. Therefore, this project created a workbook to help cancer patients adjust to the diagnosis of cancer. Research into the efficacy of bibliotherapy is reviewed, and several popular books on cancer are critiqued. Topics addressed in the workbook itself include a brief overview of cancer, choosing medical providers and treatments, taking a more active role in the treatment process, addressing unhealthy thoughts and behaviors, stress management, coping with difficult emotions, obtaining support, and informational and support resources, among others. Plans for future evaluation and incorporation of feedback are discussed, as are proposed uses of the workbook in various settings.
