This study focused on four single African American military fathers who are raising their children and presents a positive view of African American fathers. The guiding question for this study was "How do single African American military fathers handle and adapt child rearing tasks with their young children after divorce?" Based on two theoretical perspectives: Bronfenbrenner's (1989) Ecology of Human Development and McAdoo's (1990) Choice and Exchange Ecological Theory, this study describes how African American fathers in this study were not absent from their children's lives and the availability of fathers played an important role in the development of positive self-esteem in African American children.

Five conceptual themes emerged from this study: (1) Adjustment to Single Parental Responsibilities; (2) Father-Child Interactions; (3) Parenting Styles; (4) Financial Stability; (5) Cultural Consideration. The data from these themes suggest that the single African American, military fathers in this study are actively concerned and involved in the socialization of their children.
