Thesis (Ph.D.)--Washington State University, 2004.
This dissertation summarizes a four-year, virtual ethnography of a group of experimental web designers in an effort to contextualize and describe their role in contemporary digital visual culture. In order to understand this virtual community, it is imperative to first understand graphic designers as effective agents in cultural production. Web designers, I argue, expand the definitions of graphic design and may inexorably change traditional design practices and professional communal structures. This study provides evidence of creative discourse that at times runs counter to commercial media manufacture and the complex relationships between media production and consumption. By looking at the community's online community sites---discussion spaces, inspirational links, and collective resources---and the experimental web designs themselves, we can expose the conservative and progressive influences on web-based cultural production. We can also begin to trace a history of the experimental visual artifacts that are produced to engage percipients in a more visceral manner that other designed products. The baroque or eye candy website is thus a dialectical surface upon which the struggle to define contemporary visual computer-mediated communication occurs.
