Not all students are successful in their high school foreign language classes. The purpose of this study was to document predictors of student failure in high school foreign language courses and provide high school guidance counselors with referenced data to support their individual student academic advisement recommendations. This survey studied the relationships between English language competency as reflected in student's standardized tests and English language courses with foreign language course grades and accomplishments. Correlational research was used as the methodology for data collection and analysis. The study compared data from 234 graduates of Heritage High School, Conyers, Georgia, who were members of the 2002 graduating class. English language competency was found to have a significant correlation with the successful completion of high school foreign language requirements.
