Thesis (Ph.D.)--Columbia University, 2004.
The major purpose of this study is to arrive at general conclusions about Horace's self-representation in the Epodes and about the inner coherence of this iambic collection on the basis of a careful analysis of the individual poems. I evaluate important aspects of Horace's public and private self-representations in the epodes and critically compare thematic roles of the public and private domains in the collection.

In the first half of my thesis (chapters 1, 2, and 3), I position Horace in the framework of the iambic tradition and then examine the literary virtues of those epodes that address momentous political and social issues of the Second Triumvirate. I analyze Horace's various stances in these so-called "political epodes": Horace's stance as Maecenas's client, Horace in the guise of Octavian's soldier, Horace's stance as a rhetorician, etc. In the second half of my dissertation (chapters 4 and 5), I examine other thematic groupings within the Epodes---the invectives and the poems that deal with love and magic---in terms of Horace's self-representation, as well as in terms of poet's confrontations with his iambic opponents: mistresses, witches, etc. Among other things, I focus on the various power relations that exist between the poet and other characters of the Epodes.

On the basis of these analyses, I conclude that the most salient feature of Horace's iambic persona is its constant engagement in political, erotic, and literary strife with a string of ever-changing opponents. Moreover, this recurrent motif of confrontation helps to bring cohesion to the Epodes as a collection. I argue that the Epodes, like a number of other Augustan poetic books, is a coherent poetic text that obeys internal structural and rhetorical principles. I also position the Epodes in the context of triumviral literature and examine Horace's vision of the genus tenue vis-a-vis that of Virgil in the Eclogues.
