Thesis (M.Sc.)--Dalhousie University (Canada), 2003.
Nitro-substituted polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAHs) are widespread environmental pollutants, and many are known to have mutagenic and carcinogenic properties. Therefore, the sensitive and selective monitoring of their presence in the environment is of great interest. As the level of nitroarenes in air particulate samples is often very low, electron capture methods may be used as a very sensitive analytical approach for characterization of these types of samples. Furthermore, many interfering compounds, e.g. PAHs, which often accompany nitro-PAHs, are not detected under electron capture conditions.

Sensitivity of the nitro-PAHs is enhanced when they are reduced and derivatized with an electron capturing group containing fluorine, providing a polyfluorinated tag. In this thesis, the sensitivities of two different electron capture methods were compared for six different nitro-PAHs and their derivatives. In addition, the nature of the derivatizing agent, whether aromatic or aliphatic attachment of the fluorines, was investigated for differences in sensitivities in electron capture processes.
