Thesis (Ph.D.)--Stanford University, 2004.
Over the last decade there have been numerous time series studies on the effects of particulate air pollution on mortality. Typically, these studies fit a Poisson log-linear model to time series of daily mortality, weather variables and ambient particulate air pollution concentrations. The parameter estimates corresponding to the particulate air pollution terms are then used to quantify the effect of an increase in the ambient particulate air pollution concentration on daily mortality. In this thesis, we develop methodology in order to improve upon the results obtained from particulate air pollution mortality time series studies. The areas investigated include combining ambient air pollution concentrations from multiple monitors, constrained particulate air pollution distributed lag models, biologically plausible concentration response curves, interactions between particulate air pollution and temperature, and the use of distributed lag models and direct estimation for quantify mortality displacement. It will be demonstrated, using data from Cook County, Illinois and Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, that these methods can lead to more statistically accurate and meaningful particulate air pollution mortality effect estimates.
