This study examines the effect of incorporation of the Transtheoretical Model of health behavior change into an occupational therapy Lifestyle Redesign program. The success of the Well Elderly Study in the 1990's prompted replication of programming that became known as Lifestyle Redesign (Clark, Azen, Zemke, Jackson, Carlson, & Mandel, 1997). In a different context, researchers of health behavior created a "stages of change" model based on the Transtheoretical Model of health behavior (Prochaska, Norcross & DiClemente, 1994). Research utilizing the Transtheoretical Model focused primarily on single behavior individual change. Little research has been done incorporating the Transtheoretical Model into a group interaction model. Further, occupational therapy literature references utilization of the Transtheoretical Model to a very limited extent, and then only as a measure of an intervention, not as a treatment.

This case study research design specifically examined the incorporation of the Transtheoretical Model of health behavior change within a Lifestyle Redesign program. One randomly selected group of seven women was observed and interviewed to study how they contemplate, cope with, and make decisions about health behavior change.

A fundamental goal of Lifestyle Redesign is to facilitate health-enhancing change. The study found that incorporation of the Transtheoretical Model gives structure and strength to change interventions that fit well into occupational therapy group intervention. It is suggested that the Transtheoretical Model is widely applicable in occupational therapy practice where therapists seek behavior change.
