A review of the writings of the geriatric profession reveals that these professionals have concentrated upon the problems due to physical deterioration. Much less concern and effort has been directed towards problems related to the emotional and psychological aspects of retirement.

However, studies such as the MacArthur program, (Rowe & Kahn 1998) have indicated that an over-whelming percentage of the over 55 population will have many years of active lifetime expectancy (ALE) which will not be dominated by disease or physical ailments. The Theory of Disengagement was derived from the National Institute of Mental Health study on aging (1958). For some time, this viewpoint was both widely accepted but also resented and opposed. Maddox (1964) Neugarten & Havighurst & Tobin, (1961). It has since been supplanted by the more optimistic concept of the Activities Theory as defined in 1972 by Lemon, Bengtson and Peterson.

This hypothesis was tested by evaluating a population exposed to a series of seminars structured specifically for seniors. The Evans & Cope Quality of Life Questionnaire Manual (1989) was used to pre-test/post-test both the test group as well as a control group. Resulting data was analyzed to establish whether or not there is a significant correlation between level of commitment and perceptions of quality of life.
