Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Union Institute, 1998.
This creative and applied scholarship includes a contextual essay and a teaching manual that applies Laban Movement Studies (LMS) to the training of actors. The manual is a method for teaching actors the use of the Laban/Bartenieff principles of Body, Shape, Space, and Effort and relating them to the creation of clear, authentic, and believable characterizations. Connections are made between the beliefs, values, and histories of both the actor and characters portrayed, and their physical expressivity.

to actor training in the United States. Following training in the Alexander Technique, the Feldenkrais Method, and LMS, the researcher undertook in-depth independent readings in LMS, acting and actor training, movement re-education, and spiritual studies. An internship included the study of vocal training methods for actors and singers. The researcher designed and implemented LMS-based master classes, workshops, and undergraduate courses for actors and singers to refine teaching methodologies. This resulted in the development of a fourteen-week course of study.

This LMS-based course provides a significant adjunctive contribution to actor training programs. The techniques are practical and easily presentable. They are compatible with the varying techniques and schools of acting. The vocabulary is descriptive, specific, and adaptable to a variety of learning situations and topics. The concreteness of the language allows actors, directors, and coaches to communicate more effectively. Actors develop a greater range of freedom and choice in bringing characters to life. There is value in the adaptability of the material and its flexibility in allowing each practitioner to bring his or her own training, perspectives and influences to the applications of LMS.

LMS has even greater potential in the field of acting. Colleagues are encouraged to build on this preliminary scholarship and the resulting methodology.
