Aging and modernization theory, the most influential theory in cross-cultural aging research, predicts the social status of the elderly declines with modernization. Past research has not universally supported or refuted the predictions of aging and modernization theory. This research is a more rigorous test of the aging and modernization hypothesis in American and Independent Samoa where some of the initial research in the development of this theory was conducted. Modernization was measured at the national and regional level, and modernity at the household and individual level, to precisely characterize the study population. Additionally, this research defines elders' social status as a composite of two essential components: deference/respect shown towards elders and the influence/control elders' have over important cultural and material resources. The relationship between elders' social status and modernization was examined after controlling for potential confounders: elders' age, sex, social rank, and elders' physical functional abilities and cognitive abilities.

520 $a A total of 280 interviews were conducted in Independent Samoa (n = 131) and American Samoa (n = 149). Participants included elders (n = 98), their family members (n = 93) and neighbors (n = 89). This research design allowed for the comparison of elders' social status from the perspective of self-reports vs. those of others, from the reports of relatively older and younger individuals, and from reports of individuals who share a language and cultural tradition across national boundaries, but have had differing experiences with modernization.
520 $a Findings indicate that American Samoa as a whole is more modern than Independent Samoa although considerable individual heterogeneity exists within each nation. This research finds that the social status of American Samoan elders, as reported by elders themselves, family members and neighbors, is lower than that of their Independent Samoan peers and that this relationship is not modified by elders' age, sex, or social rank. There is some evidence to suggest that family members and neighbors may have considered elders' functional and cognitive abilities when rating elders' social status, but the evidence is not sufficient to say that elders with more functional restrictions and more cognitive impairment have diminished social status.
